The Challenge
Flashlight Factory
Every Part has a Purpose
“Designed objects are typically made up of various parts, or structures, and each structure serves a specific function that relates to the overall function of the device”. Take apart your flashlight piece by piece and note the function of each piece. Complete the following T-Chart to show how each part helps the flashlight to function.
Making it your Purpose
Using the parts from your flashlight, make something useful out of some or all of the parts you have disassembled. You may trade parts with other teams. You should give your device a name, describe its purpose, and create a T-chart listing each structure you used and its specific function

To Begin:
The second challenge saw students complete a “Flashlight” challenge where they learned that every part has a purpose. Students were to disassemble a flashlight and create a new product from the pieces. Based on feedback and reflection, we decided to group students a little differently for this challenge. We tried to group students based on grade and in smaller groups. The groupings were better suited to this challenge and we got great feedback from the students. We knew we were on the right track.
The 5E Model
Engage: We read the children's book "Rosie Revere Engineer" by Andrea Beaty and discussed what it was to be an engineer
Explore - Students were given a flashlight and were asked to disassemble it to see how it worked. They were asked to think about every part that was in the flashlight and what the purpose of each part was
Explain - As a group, it was discussed how every part of the flashlight had a purpose and each part was identified along with their purposes.
Elaborate - Students used the various parts of the flashlight to create their own design
Evaluate - Students presented their new creations and 'pitched' their ideas to the group explaining their design and its uses.

We grouped students differently for this challenge. We kept grade levels together and reduced the number of students in each group to 3. This was received with a lot more positive feedback and overall, worked well.
